Privacy

This is a personal family journal. We don't run adverts, we don't use analytics or tracking tools, and visitors don't get any cookies.

Cookies

Reading the site sets no cookies at all. The only cookie the site ever uses is a sign-in cookie for the site's owners when they log in to the private editing area (it's limited to the /admin/ part of the site and ends when they sign out or after two hours of inactivity).

What the site stores

  • Searches: the search page doesn't keep what you search for. To stop very rapid automated searching, it briefly keeps a scrambled (one-way hashed) version of your connection's address with the time of each search. These records are cleared after about a minute and aren't used for anything else.
  • Links to other websites: links to other sites pass through a short address on this site beginning /go/. When one is followed we count it — the date and time, which link it was and which page it was on. No IP address or other personal information is recorded.
  • Server logs: like almost every website, our web host's servers keep standard access logs (which include IP addresses, the pages requested — including any search words — and browser details) for security and troubleshooting.
  • Email: if you email us, we'll only use your message and address to reply to you.

There are no forms on the public site that collect personal information, and no comments or accounts.

Videos

If a page ever includes a YouTube video, nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. Once you do, the video is played from YouTube's privacy-enhanced (youtube-nocookie.com) service and Google's privacy policy applies to that video.

Private pages

Some pages are shared privately with family and friends using a special link. These pages aren't listed anywhere on the site, aren't in search results and ask search engines not to index them — but anyone who has the link can open the page, so please don't pass private links on.
